Calais - Tobacco
Tobacco is cheaper in France and cheaper still in Belgium compared with the UK. Supermarkets in France DO NOT sell tobacco.
Keeping track of prices in France and Belgium is a difficult process. In Adinkerke, Belgium (where most tobacco is sold) prices are exclusively quoted in Pound Sterling and fierce competition results in prices changing almost daily. In France prices are always quoted in Euros (but they take sterling). As Britain is not part of the Euro, Sterling fluctuates up and down like a yo-yo, so what seems like a good deal one week may well change if the Pound dives or strengthens.
Where to buy?
On the ferry and Eurotunnel, Cigarette prices are 5 - 12% more than in the Belgian shops, 2 - 5% compared with French (as the 800 pack sizes are cheaper).
With such a small difference, visitors to France may find it more convenient to buy on the ferry on the way back to the UK.
If you are buying pipe or pouch tobacco, remember prices on board are at least 39% more than in Belgium and France.
Cigars are about 51% more on board than in Belgium Shops and about 22% more than in French.
